I realize that a narrow gauge locomotive has limited access to inside journals, but few restoration groups even consider inspecting them. On the 4-6-0 I restored (drivers greaseblock lubricated,) there was some rust on each of the journals to cause damage if it were moved. This was on an engine that had only spent about 15 years uncovered before a shelter was erected, in Vermont, which does not have a terribly hostile climate. I have found even condensation will cause rust, as rust was found on the tender journals. My friend Dave Conrad, who moved the whole Steamtown collection from Bellows Falls to Scranton, inspected each and every journal and polished and lubricated them as necessary.
