A major issue in the us was not only saftey but also standardizing on a common coupling & air brake connection system for interchange. Imagine having two different roads using different couplers than the knuckle Coupler on opposite sides of the U.S it could be a major logistical head ache since we have tens of thousands more cars in circulation in the states than New Zealand.
