By the time it got to Klondike Mines Railway--when this locomotive was already over twenty years old and had been through several owners--it'd likely have been black overall. The few photographs I've seen of this engine operating for KMR show little to nothing in the way of trim.
As-built (for Kansas Central I think?) it's tougher to say. Brooks had a few color schemes in use during the early 1880's so you'd want a specification for this specific locomotive. Base colors would've been typical for the period, rich relatively dark hues, but not usually black except when specified. Brooks line trim was generally characterized by relatively straight lines with little intricate scroll work.

EDIT: Bruce posted before I hit "post". Seeing that KMR #1 did indeed come up through the U.P. network (via the Kansas Central) I imagine it was black overall by the mid-late 1880's fitting with U.P system practice. The very nice builder's photograph he posted illustrates what I mean about Brooks-style trim: Mostly straight-ish lines, tasteful but relatively easy to apply befitting what was at the time still a lower-cost builder.
