Years ago, after a day trip on the C&TS three friends wanted to see Gato (Pagosa Junction) These guys were all Denver area residents and had never seen what remained of the line between Chama and Arboles.
I told them there had been a lot of wet weather lately and the dirt road could be in bad shape, plus there was signage saying the roads were the property of the Jacrilla tribe an there was no trespassing.
Last couple of times before I went through there I was in 4X4s and it was muddy with deep puddles. this time I was driving a front wheel drive Chevy Celebrity. (My business partner was too tight to furnish a decent company car) After almost getting stuck in the first mud hole west of Navajo tank I figured the only way to ford the mud holes was to power through them and hope you could maintain steering. We made it after almost getting stuck a couple of times and slid into Gato about dusk. Went back to Chama by way of Pagosa Springs.
This is still a great drive with lot of RR history left The road is sometimes graded . The portion before Juanita and west is maintained and even graveled in sections.
Glad I could see it before the Gomez store left and the tank fell down. .
