Right On, Bill -

As mentioned several times previously, the Fred Harmon museum on the west side of Pagosa Springs is well worth a visit by anyone with even the slightest interest in the history of the Old West.  Allow at least half a day to take it all in – the Gomez store is only a small part of their treasuresThe Museum has been CLOSED — See Chris Kilgore's note at [ngdiscussion.net], below.   Across Highway 160 from the museum site is the Pagosa Brewing Company, a great place for lunch or dinner accompanied by a mug or two of Tony's national-award-winning beer.   smileys with beer

Here's a rough map of the country west of Chama:
Tiffany-Map.jpg

As Bill noted, the dirt road alongside and on top of the old r.o.w. – especially the section between Dulce and Juanita (a mile or two east of Gato) – is NOT suitable for driving in wet weather.  Going west from Arboles through Allison, Tiffany,* Ignacio and on to Durango the railroad was well away from any roads at times, crossing a lot of ranching and farming country, and it many places all traces have long since been plowed under.

p.s.  Note the 'Los Pinos River' flowing through Bayfield and Ignacio at the west side of the map.  Also once crossed by the D&RGW, this is NOT the same 'Los Pinos River' as the one still crossed today by the C&TS between Cumbres Pass and Osier . . .
