I followed the old railroad grade from Durango to Chama this summer with the family for our vacation in July...after riding the C&S we spent an enjoyable afternoon driving the former San Juan route over to Chama and then rode the C&T the next day.
While researching and planning for the vacation I stumbled across a joint CO/NM initiative...Just finalized within the past year is the project "Tracks across Borders"...I'm sure others on this forum can provide better background, but here is a link to one webpage with details:

Even the wife who is not nearly as much of a railfan as my son and I enjoyed the drive...some of it on a narrow dirt road...it was very easy to see where the RR grade was, and with interesting ruins at Gato and several former D&RGW bridges along the way it proved to be a fun time.
I'm sure others who were around when the actual train still went through there may scoff, but for us it was an interesting way to get a feel for what the line would have been like 60+ years ago. For those who have not made the trek I would wholeheartedly recommend it.
