Based on very fragmentary evidence, I have the impression there were substantial regional variations on what the well dressed engineman wore. I tend to associate the tall striped caps with the west, while in the east the same style caps might be in light or dark denim, and perhaps a more rounded top. In the west these guys might be the models:
A variation of the above which yours truly affected was the squashed down creased version of the pinstripe cap:
I had to struggle for an eastern example, and the best I could do was this.
But at least you don't get anymore "Eastern" than a GG-1 on THE Mainline.
