While I won't argue that ND or UV filters would provide more protection for the sensor, the extra pieces of glass may result in some pretty substantial flares. I've had more than a few sunrise shots and night shots with bright headlights spoiled because of the presence of filters. No matter how nicely coated they are, I've yet to find a brand that didn't flare to some degree. Anytime I know I'm going to have a very bright light in the frame, I typically get the filters off my lenses.
