Photography question. Can shooting video of welding damage the camera?

This question actually comes about because of the narrow gauge, and I figure there are a couple of people here that will have an opinion about this.

Unprotected eyes will be damaged if they watch somebody welding. Can we assume that the same will occur to a video or still digital camera? But yet, I've seen a video where someone has shot video of a volunteer torching off a steel rivet. Would you do this with your camera?
