Today I returned to the Madera Sugar Pine country with the goal of exploring the line out to Granite Creek Saddle. Here's the map showing this line:
We start our tour by driving up Chowchilla Mountain Road until we reach the railroad grade:
As I was driving the grade, I spotted a short unmapped spur just below the grade and found what appears to be a telephone pole:
It looks like the pole was attached to a tree trunk, but has since fallen over. The wire used to secure the pole still looks good after 80 years.
We arrive at the Crows Foot:
The left line went to Roundtree Saddle, the middle line went toward's Devil's Peak, the right line is the Granite Creek Saddle line and seems to be the last line that Madera Sugar Pine used.
Previously, this line was blocked by brush and fallen trees. Someone has been busy in the last month cleaning it up.
About 1/2 mile down the line there's a nice cut:
