Here is another view of switching moves on the pass

Passenger trains also required switching moves on the pass to place the locomotive on the downhill end of the train

A final view of ancient steam and snowy mountains in the Austrian Alps. A few years after our 1974 visit the line was dieselized with cog diesels locomotives and diesel rail buses. Finally ore hauling was switched to adhesion diesels and the cog rail was removed. But then the end came, after electrifying the northern section to the mine, ore was hauled the long way around via Selzthal behind electric power. Today the old mountain section is a museum operation with rail buses where travelers can enjoy the scenery but without the steam and thunderous exhaust of ancient steam engines. Preserved cog engines are on display in Vordernberg, including one of the 2-12-2s.
