I got back to the MSP country today as my wife had never seen a Fire Lookout, and after spending Sunday hiking to Vernal & Nevada Falls in Yosemite then spending the night at the Wawona Inn, we headed up to the MSP country and Signal Peak Fire Lookout. I'll spare you the long story of trying to find a road that was not closed heading up into the high country and just say after 1.5 hours of trying, we eventually drove up Chowchilla Mountain Road to the MSP grade and on to Signal Peak. After visiting the Lookout I was driving back to the Crows Foot when I noticed a railroad grade branching off to the west. I parked the truck (leaving the AC running for my wife) and hiked up this grade:
Shortly after taking the above photo I spotted a piece of rail:
The spur ran up to the crest of the ridge line. Near the top, I found these two whole sticks of rail complete with rail joiners:
Near the rail was this small piece of broken cast iron:
Its about 4 inches x 12 inches...
