Thanks to Earl and a couple of others for correcting the rolling stock move date and my memory. My photos of the first move with engines 488, 482 and 495 occurred on Sept. 4, 1970 (not late December). I came home on Navy leave in September 1970 and again Christmas 1971. I got those two trips home confused. There's some great photos of the train arriving in Antonito and the work trains to Chama, so glad I was able to provide a few shots of the train being assembled and departing on the Alamosa end - even if from a rank 19-year old amateur. History is meant to be shared and glad to share them to those who appreciate the significance. Also found out a local history buff was also part of that initial crew getting 484 over the hill to Chama ... Bob Eveleth. He provided many of the same stories of clearing the rocks from the tracks, sleeping in the open cars, shuffling the cars around, etc. as reported by some of the others. Today, the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad is in pristine condition and the best narrow gauge in the country ... all due to many unsung heroes of those early days. Your contributions and hard work nearly 50 years ago can never be thanked enough.
