Thanks Mike. I find the place pretty fascinating really. An enormous roster of serviceable and preserved locomotives all housed within the grounds of an authentic steam railroad complex (former Lackawanna Railroad).
Probably the coolest thing for me is they really allow the public to get an intimate close-up view of the entire process with the steam locomotives. From 9 am till the places closes around 5 you can stand there and watch them hostle the locomotive with all the sights, sounds and smells you can imagine. Not many places have that to offer. Probably the coolest thing is when the crew brings it in for the day. The fireman banks the fire while spinning on the turntable and cranks the injector on till he has a full glass inside the roundhouse. Once sitting pretty in her stall, the mechanical crew takes over, greases her up, checks all the moving parts with a hammer and flashlight and puts her to bed. That's efficient and really authentic based on all the reading I've done with how it was done "back in the day".
