A snippet in Trains Magazine of March 1943 was a note on Colorado by Herbert Gaarder, Jr (sic) of Chicago, Ill. He said “I am glad to report the Rio Grande Southern is getting more prosperous as times passes. When I went through Antonito last Spring, one could see the Chili line in the form of great piles of narrow-gauge rails and cross ties. …” Good to know the rail did not get to Japan before December 7, 1941. Are there any more records of dates the work trains ran that tore up the line and unloaded the rail at Antonito? Gordon Chappell has a photo of those piles of rails I believe.
