Thanks for the compliment on this somewhat unorthodox thread. While the screen shots are geographically far apart, they are very close together in time, thanks to some long drives by James Parfrey. He deserves the credit for finding some great photo locations in a totally chaotic environment, with thousands of railfans and locals all vying for opportunities to see and record 4014 and 844. To stay with the steam and snow theme, here is the double header with distant snow east of Carter, Wyoming, on May 13.
Back on the Silverton line, we found 476 crossing the Animas River bridge and about to enter the Animas canyon on May 15.
This morning, May 19, it looked like the skies might actually clear up, so I hiked with the dog to my favorite ridge viewpoint. Sure enough, the view cleared up, but the next snow flurry beat 476 and her train by a mere two minutes. More snow storms are predicted for the next three days … but by Thursday there might be another chance for steam and snow (on the ground, not in the air)
