OK. this is one of the more confusing cars on the roster. Back around the turn of the last century the D&RG ran cars around the system that distributed everybody's pay. IIRC this happened once a month. In 1909 the car was former chair car 24 (Billmeyer & Small, 1879) which had been used in this service since 1883. It had been designated Business Car F in 1885 or '86.
With me so far?
In 1909 Car F was wrecked on the RGS and taken to Alamosa. Now at the same time "Tourist Construction" car 0452 (orig. Emigrant Sleeper 103[D&RG 1883] then Tourist Sleeper 452 in 1882 and to 0452 in 1902 or '03) was in the shops. Needing a Pay Car for the next month's run the D&RG swapped the bodies and the numbers. So Car F (1st) became car 0452 (2nd) and car 0452 (1st) became Car F (2nd).
Time moves on.
Car 0452 (2nd) stays in work service, with the Emigrant Sleeper body on the Chair Car trucks etc, going through various designations, and finally, as kitchen-diner-bunk car, winds up on the C&TS in 1970.
Car F (2nd), with the Chair Car body on the Emigrant Sleeper trucks etc, becomes Business Car B-5(1913), B-2(1917) and finally Cinco Animas (1963). It winds up on the D&SNG in 1982.
Still here? Ok, almost done.
What I don't know how extensive the "swap" in 1909 was. I'm hoping to get some definitive answers on this from the 0452 rebuild. It is known that the shop was under some pressure to get a pay car ready so it must have been a "quick & dirty" job. The absolute minimum would, I think, have been to transfer the partition with the teller's window and the safe, but various evidence, such as the bunk car designation of 0452, indicates a more extensive swap. So how much of which car wound up as the other car back in '09? I've never been inside either car, btw, and can only go from photos, plans and other peoples reports.
Will the real Car F please stand up?
