Having just returned from Britain and being there while much of this has gone on for the last 3 weeks, several things must be noted here. First the standard British passenger train usually exceeds 100 mph between stops in order to keep their schedules. Second, all British ROW is Fenced. Third, there are a LOT of trains. The sheer numbers of trespassers who have invaded the ROW by going through or cutting the fences has overwhelmed the railroads resulting in late trains and severe congestion because safety minded crews have had to stop their trains to get people off the ROW , or slow down to a crawl to pass through the crowds. The two pictured were basically the last straw for the railroads and the police. When we left the country on Tuesday, the future of further operation of the Scotsman as well as mainline steam was being discussed with a possibility that this sort of behavior could. bring a stop to both the running of the Scotsman as well as mainline steam in general.
