In some cases people need to be protected from themselves. I know a couple engineers who have told stories of their brothers walking off the job after hitting a pedestrian. Watching helplessly with the train in emergency strike and kill folks too close to the tracks. What is often forgotten about is our actions affect more than ourselves. Disregarding common sense and safety at the risk of being hurt is something the engineer has to live with long after the funeral for the one who was ignorant.
