John K, and Earl in Josie Crums book (page 219) she describes what Earl posted, the #3 drivers on 40 dropping off the rail first and caused the #4 to derail as well. This combined with the 1-1/2" of super elevation was enough for 40 to roll and pull 20 over as well.
No idea how credible her information was, but she probably got it from the engine crews or wreck clean up crew. I should point out that 20s fireman Joe Wilmer passed away from this wreck.
