Howdy all,
It’s been a while since we have posted an update on the 168 project so I figured it was about time. We have passed a number of significant milestones, first of which being completion of the running gear rebuild. This consisted of a complete de-wheeling of the locomotive, new tires, new shoes and wedges, numerous frame repairs, spring rigging rebuild, valve gear rebuild, boring of cylinders, resurfacing port surfaces, lead truck rebuilt, etc. In addition, the boiler work is nearing completion as the locomotive was tubed this last week. The form 4 is complete, new dome lid built, safety valves rebuilt, throttle rebuilt, new throttle rod machined, etc. We anticipate being able to fill the boiler next week and chase any minor leaks that may be present before pursuing a hydro of note with the FRA. We remain slightly ahead of schedule and under budget thus far on the project and anticipate completion this year. I would like to take the opportunity to thank our team here at the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad for all their hard work and dedication on this and our many other projects. Even though the 168 is a high profile project, everyday there is a hive of activity at the railroad preparing for upcoming season. When you visit the railroad be sure to thank the team for everything they do! On that note, I hope to see all of you in C&TS country soon!!
Best,
Stathi
