From the pictures I have seen of it today in Chama it appears to 108 lb. roll roofing. Tar paper with granules affixed by use of tar. These days it comes in a lot of colors. But it used to be a gray color only. Since cabooses used to have tar paper roofs I would think that would have been used on the sand houses. Of course "you mileage may vary".
