Sharrod, there were weight and speed limits but the speed limits were pretty much unnecessary as not many trucks could achieve them unless running down hill. There still are weight limits on bridges and hiways with 80,000 pounds being pretty much a universal limit except on lesser roads.

The railroad had a significant advantage over trucks in that time period. Not only could the railroad haul more tonnage faster they could do it cheaper than the truckers of that era.
