One of the requirements the D&RGW had imposed upon them was that when they diverted traffic from the railroad to their trucking subsidiary, they had to maintain the lower rail-based rates. So the D&RGW had to absorb the differences in the rail vs. trucking costs. This was fine with the D&RGW as Motorway was designed to rid the company of all branch lines, whether standard or narrow gauge.
