In addition to all else that has been said, the trucks of the 1950's were not as large or dependable as the trucks are today. 1 rail-car load of pipe would probably take 2 trucks to haul. 1 train could haul many rail car loads. I don't know how many rail-car loads were in a single train typically, but it would have taken dozens of trucks to haul what one train could.
