Why the San Juan Extension? Why not Rio Grande Motorways?

Once the pipe, drilling mud, and other supplies reached Farmington, they all had to be trucked to their final destination.

Why did the customers insist on the narrow gauge hauling the freight by rail to Farmington if it would have to be transloaded to trucks for final delivery to the field? It seems like it would have been faster and more cost efficient to have used Rio Grande Motorways.

Was the decision due to the fares the Rio Grande was allowed to charge? Was rail cheaper than road?
