In 1981 my new bride and I spent 4 days and nights at Ah! Wilderness guest ranch (Just south of the present Tall Timbers). We wanted to intercept the Rio Grande Zephyr the day after we left and thus left from Silverton. To do that we took the car to Silverton and left it there, and bused back to Durango. Took a taxi or were close enough to walk to the Durango Depot to board for the trip in the morning to the ranch. Leaving from Silverton saved us about 6 hours or more. We would have had to ride back to Durango then drive back up near Silverton then go north. A lot of folks decide one way is enough anyway and ride back on the bus. We did that once in the 60's I believe and were able to go back and shoot some of the returning trains between Rockwood and Durango. On my 2014 trip, we paid for the premium car, so I figured why not ride both ways to get my money's worth, plus the lighting is different and your views are the other direction making it just as enjoyable.
