On the morning of October 3, 1967 engines 487, 497, 493, and 498 were serviced and ready for taking their trains on to Durango and Alamosa respectively. 487 and 497 had brought in a long train from Durango the previous day and would make two Cumbres turns that day before making a Chama-Alamosa run on October 4. 493 would continue with the October 2 heavy freight to Carbon Junction, set out part of the train, and continue to Durango. 498 would run light Chama to Gato and would help 493 from Gato to Falfa, then continue light engine to Durango
