Earl, there is a mix of types. The story I heard was they would load junk on the log flats on the way up the hill and then kick the scrap off along a particularly steep slope. Last time I was there I could see 5 or 6 stacks, but that's down a bit from 20 years ago. Cass started welding stuff in the Mower Lumber Co. era since Shay 5 had an all welded tender when the state took over.
