I spent a week in Durango earlier this month centered around the Durango & Silverton's "Winter Photographer's Weekend." The plan was to see Southern Pacific 4-6-0 #18 in action in the snow, but heavy snowfall made things a lot more interesting as the railroad ran 3 flanger trains while I was there. This video shows K-28 #476 pulling the Cascade Canyon train on Thursday February 14th during the first major snowstorm. The second part of the video shows #476 powering a flanger extra after the storm (with footage from both February 15th and 20th). Despite the fact that most of the special trains were limited due to the weather (and a snow slide just south of Cascade), I had an excellent time as the extra trains (and the incredible amount of snow) more than made up for any disappointment from missed photo opportunities. The railroad went out of their way to keep the line open and ensure that all the trains still ran, even in very challenging conditions.
I'll also be posting an SP 18 video in a little while.
