I made a quick trip to Durango to see the SP 18 run on Feb. 18. We got into Durango the afternoon of the 17th in time to head north and catch Extra 476 East rolling its mixed train consist north (west) of Home Ranch.
We caught them again at the 36th St. crossing on the north side of Durango.
Crossing 6th St entering the depot yard.
In Durango, newly minted VP/GM Jeff Johnson gave us a quick walk through of the roundhouse where we got to see the work being done on 493. This is the back head showing all the new flexible staybolts being installed.
As operated by the D&RGW, the K37's had very few flexible staybolts in their boilers. The only flexible stays were the throat sheet behind the #4 driver spring. This made the boilers very prone to breaking staybolts. Here we see all the new flexible bolts installed on the left side sheet. I would say that when 497 gets put back into service, this will be done to her as well.
