Photo charters virtually always produce more and better images than chases. They are typically run by photographers who work with the railroad to coordinate the best available consist, timing, lighting etc. It's a much more controlled set of circumstances. Given the choice between an SP 18 charter and an uncontrolled Big Boy chase, I'll choose the charter every time. With Pete in charge, it's a no-brainer. He's been doing this stuff for over a decade. The Big Boy thing could be a total bust. With the clock ticking and less than 2 months to go, possibly the most complicated restoration in the history of preservation railroading still has yet to turn a wheel. We're getting down to crunch time. And then there are the uncertainties about the chase itself, even if the locomotive does make the call. Even the vaunted "Big Boy Chase Bus" may get mired in grid-lock traffic and give patrons minimal return on an $1800 investment.
Given the choice, I'd spend half that and ride Pete's trip. Pete will get you good photos, and foamer traffic in the Animas Canyon will be minimal.
