Freight car colors.

Maybe this has been covered but I was not able to find the answer, yet.

I know that “boxcar red” or “oxide red” was a very common color for most freight rolling stock in the steam era. This included stock cars too. However, at some point, the Grande started painting the stock cars black. Why?
