The fastest time ever made on the narrow gauge with a 30 inch wheel for any distance, was made between Alamosa and Salida last Friday [5/30/1902] by special which carried Tommy Barton, wife and child, with Dr. Orr, Barton’s physician. Mr Barton, who was suffering with appendicitis, was in the last stage of the disease and it was necessary to get him to the hospital for surgical aid, which proved afterward to be too late, as he died a few hours after the operation. The run was made between Alamosa and Salida, a distance of 88 miles. In exactly three hours
.
Counting the mountain mileage, this was the fastest time ever made on the narrow gauge system. The special was in charge of Conductor Twitcheil and Engineer Martinez. [Alamosa Journal, June 5, 1902]
[He liven in Chama and had been working on the Chili line and had the gut pain for 3 months but thought it from the bounce of his engine, when friends told him about appendicitis. He had 3 brothers and three kids.]
