Today it snowed all day in Ridgway, which brought back memories of similar weather during Thanksgiving week of 1966. Most photos of the narrow gauge could lead one to believe that narrow gauge country enjoys almost perpetual good weather. This was definitely not the case on Wednesday, November 23, 1966, the day before Thanksgiving. That morning 483 and 484 were preparing to take a freight from Chama to Durango, while 493 and 488 were set for a morning Cumbres turn and an afternoon run from Chama to Alamosa. I had my dad's newly acquired 8mm movie camera
and tried it out on the chase to Cumbres. With a limited movie film supply, I switched to still pictures at Cumbres for the return to Chama.
Here the engines are setting out the train on the siding
Helper 488 has set out the two cabooses and is turning on the wye to pick up the cabooses
Engine 493 is coming around the wye next
