C & TS Cab In a Thunderstorm
Earl was engineer and I was fireman on #487 on Aug. 10, 1997. It was raining fairly heavy when we left Chama and kept getting heavier. We picked up some cars at Lobato and that made it a tonnage train, but the weather was a major factor. We ran into a huge thunderstorm just above MP 337 and ground to a halt. It was raining and hailing so hard that you couldn't see the locomotive's smokebox....
Video starts at Lobato and ends at Cumbres with lots of excitement in between. This was probably the most exciting trip I was on and definitely the one where I shoveled the most coal.
BTW- this was the date of my 20th High School reunion. Think I picked the better activity for the day...
