Here are a couple shots of Earl when he was working at Roaring camp circa 1979.
The Kahuku was usually run with diesel #40 pushing and handling the air brakes (#40 can be
seen on the right side of the first photo). Together they could handle three cars on the grade.
But in the winter when there were few passengers the Kahuku was
run with a single car. I got a cab ride on one of these trips with Tom Shreve
(the gentleman in the cab door in the 2nd photo) as the engineer. It was a very interesting
trip, taking two attempts to get up the 8 1/2 percent grade to the lower switchback.
Before starting down hill the locomotive's hand brake was cranked half way on.
As we traveled downhill conductor handled the car's hand brake with Tom using the
locomotive's steam brake. It was like watching 19th century railroading in action.
