The "Racers" in Winter (NNG)

January 04, 2019 02:05PM
On my final trip to Europe in 1975 I had 2-3 goals in mind. One was to visit Lauda and see the "Racers" in winter. My brother and I had witnessed this several mornings in the summer of 1974. The trains depart Lauda station at 7 a.m. with the train on the right going to Wertheim, and the train on the left is headed to Wurzburg. These would normally both be powered by class 023 2-6-2's, but on this morning the train on the right to Wertheim has a class 052 2-10-0 as power. Unlike the summertime, the lighting at 7 am in March is not very bright. It was so dark that we actually skipped doing movies, which we had captured on 3 different days in the previous August-September.
The slides came out better than I thought, and thanks to some work in scanning and PS they look decent. Something you don't see very often. Enjoy this dual steam train winter scene. In a few months this would no longer be possible with the withdrawal of steam.
