At least during the era that the Monero Coal Mine was shipping via the D&RG NG, coal moved east on the narrow gauge. That means that the further east that the Railroad coaled the locomotives, the higher the [total delivered] cost of that coal. So, coaling in Antonito made more economic sense than than coaling the locomotives in Alamosa, only to haul that same coal back to Antonito inside the tenders.
