A week or so ago there was some discussion of the importance of managing the boiler water level when tipping over Cumbres. Probably every fireman who hired out back in the old days heard stories about boiler explosions from the old timers. Even though SP was all diesel by the time I hired out, I remember hearing the stories from the hogheads I worked with. And the pictures were always scary. I ran across a few small prints I acquired somewhere along the line of an explorer on the SP in 1946 at Bosque, Arizona. The devastation is pretty impressive.









I guess the Rio Grande fireman were trained well because I am not aware of anything to awful happening on the ng.
