What sad news.
It was an honor to know Ernie, and an honor to be trusted recently with his negatives from 50 years ago. He was thrilled to see them on-line at last, and deeply touched by all of the positive comments so many of you made about them. Ernie didn't post here on the NGDF, but in one of his last e-mails – just over a week ago – he asked me to post his appreciation and thanks to everyone.
Here's what is probably the best-known photo
of Ernie, changing the identity of locomotive #483 on her first day of ownership by the C&TS

This is probably the best-known photo
by Ernie, taken just five days later when the first C&TS train arrived in Chama

IIRC, this one – taken at Lava Tank roughly six weeks after the above – was one of his favorites

Farewell, my friend.

p.s. I thought these photos had been posted earlier on one of the "Scarlet Harlot - Movie Star" threads concerning locomotive #483's movie work near Chama in late September and early October of 1968. An NGDF Search failed to find the thread this morning, so here are two more taken of Ernie with his own camera, probably by his co-author and good friend Joe Hereford
