That size negative is really close to a 645 negative. It would be shot on 120 or 220 film. A number of cameras were set up for this size negative. The use of this format gave more exposures per roll of film.

Cameras were made to use a given size of film. The negative size that was made with a particular camera, would very the number of exposures that you would get from a roll of film. As an example, 120 film ( measured as 6 centimeters tall ) generally referred to as 2 1/4 inch negatives , was used in different cameras to produce negatives in 2 1/4 inches tall by, 1.75 wide(645), and 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 Sq (6x6). and 2 1/4 x 3 1/2 (6x9) and 2 1/4 x 4 1/2 (6x12), and even 6x15 panoramic. This would create negatives that could be vertical on the film (645) or Square (6x6) or horizontal (6x9). you can tell by where the film type is noted on the side of the neg. 220 film was the same width (2 1/4) as 120 film but it was twice as long, and it did not have a backing paper behind the film, only a taped on leader and trailer on the ends, it used the same size spool as 120, but could not be used in "Older" cameras that had a window that was used to advance the film to the next frame.
