I remember that on a family vacation trip back in 1959 (that's back when I was ten years old) when went up through the Owens Valley to go camping at South Lake Tahoe with a borrowed tent, etc. One of the days we went north and stopped along the Truckee River so my dad could try his hand at fishing. There was this strip of rock -- very ballast like -- between the road and the river.
I told my mom and dad that there must have been a railroad here. They scoffed at the idea. Later after David Myrick's book came out, I learned that my assumption was correct.
That was the trip I first saw the SP narrow gauge. But I missed seeing any operation on it because of our travel schedule. I already had a copy of John Hungerford's little booklet about the SPng.
