Yeah, I hate to call Phil weird, especially since just about every time I say something is impossible I get it stuck in my place of privacy. But the range of giganteum is extremely limited-- only 68 groves in the Sierras. There are, of course, many old planted specimens--- the largest, IIRC, in France. They do pretty well in New Mexico, since they are cold hardy, unlike their coastal cousins. I've had several growing in pots in my pre- bonsai material collection for 15 yrs or so. But I'll risk looking stupid by saying that any S.giganteum growing in New Mexico had to have been planted here. OK--- time to duck!
