I believe the end of the narrows is where the engineer calls to stop or proceed at Lobato. Double-headers always seem to do the "long and three shorts" to signify the stop at Lobato to uncouple.
One-engine trains give the "long and two shorts" to signify no stopping at Lobato... unless they're stopping
You'll also hear the "stop ahead" as the train rounds Windy Point.
I wonder has there ever been a call to blast right through Cumbres?? I imagine thirsty steamers are always begging for that stop!
