The road out to Big Sandy Campground is passable to even small motor homes as there was one there on Monday.
Here's a section of Donald DeVere's map from Hank Johnston's Thunder in the Mountains. We're starting on the left edge and heading toward 1923 camp located in the lower center. The incline I hiked last thread was the one that goes to 1924 camp.
If you have a copy of Thunder in the Mountains you will notice that I have added to this map all of the spurs that I have found over the summer...
I have yet to find the route to 1921 Camp as that area did not burn.
About 5 miles in, you reach the location of Camp 2 that was used in 1923-24. I had visited this several times previously, but as I drove in to camp I happened to look across a small gulch and spied a large trash dump from the camp that I has missed on previous trips. This requires an investigation! I parked at Camp 2 and hiked about 1/8 mile back to where I saw the dump. As I got closer I began to see more numerous cans and broken ceramic ware:
Looks like someone was digging here...
Some bottles as well...
Cans getting more numerous...
And even more cans...
To be continued...
