MD,
based on that synopsis, I would like to have seen your perplexity on a visit down here
Our D
SC first centre cab Diesel-Electrics were left-hand controlled on both sides, since most yards they were intended for were set up for shunting the leg on that side, very comfortable with good controls at your fingertips but were absolute sob's to run on right-hand legs. N
o 1 End and N
o 2 End A-Side and B-Side stenciled appropriately in the relevant position inside the cab and with no F painted on the frame.
Actually the only NZR units that had F on the front frame were the GE D
X U-26C's and that was most appropriate since when run arse-first they ingested their filthy exhaust directly into the roof mounted central air intakes and puked it out into the cab via the heater. Such an epic design failure that our loco union banned them from being run longhood except in an emergency.
And as for the three shorts on the whistle/horn, well that's the NZR signal for "Apply Brakes" so we won't being going anywhere if you blow that.
