I believe the Friends first looked at this string of High-Side Gons in 1988 or 1989. I was assigned to the "Scrape and Paint" crew (I missed out on the F Troop Alamosa expedition) and we scraped all the flaking paint from the cars. I guess I was mostly a "Scraper", because I don't recall the painting.. The biggest pain in the butt was that some of the cars were full of steel banding, and we tried removing that. Not sure how much we got, is that stuff still in there? Anyway, I think I recall that the cars were marooned on the far track because the brasses has been removed.
