Jim and I were good friends and of course I always admired his photojournalism efforts. In later years we often corresponded and exchanged photographs. It seems that we were among the few who were still doing our own printing the "old fashion way", in the darkroom with dodging and chemical processing. You could tell a Shaughnessy 8x10 glossy print from others that were computer generated. They had a tonal range that was unmatched. Jim's last book "The Call of Trains" (W.W. Norton & Co.NY) was itself, like the man, a classic work of art. I shall miss our telephone calls on various subjects from "being Irish" to the problems of getting Black & White printing paper and chemicals in recent years.
