Interesting. I've ridden with the crews of Sierra #3 and V&T #25 a couple of times and in both cases, I could see the fireman watching the engineer closely during starts to ensure that he was in synch with the throttle movements. That all made sense to me. I'm having a tougher time figuring out how one would do it if neither the engineer nor the throttle (or the fire) are visible from the seat.
Love the 111, BTW. Been to The Loop a couple of times. Last ride was last August, a couple of days before the eclipse. Definitely one of the most unique railroad trips there is.
